Pitch a story

Pitch to HumAngle

We accept pitches from freelancers across Africa every quarter. Is the story unique and within our coverage area? Do you have the ability to tell it? Then, by all means, send us a proposal.

How collaboration works

When a pitch is approved, the burden to deliver isn’t entirely placed on the reporter. HumAngle will provide the necessary resources to make sure the idea materialises in the best way possible. You will have access to our video editing, data, illustrative, and open-source intelligence resources. So, if you plan to work with us, you should be open to an immersive, collaborative experience.

Before sending a pitch

  • Go through our past publications to understand our niche and the kinds of stories that interest us. The main coverage areas include accountability and good governance; climate change, energy, and environment; conflict and humanitarian crises; development; disinformation; displacement and migration; election security; extremism; gender; and human rights.
  • We only fund investigative story pitches. For us, an investigative report is a long-form article that not only shares details of human suffering but also calls out those responsible using an evidence-driven approach. It could also be a story that deeply unravels previously unknown or groundbreaking facts about an important issue of public interest.
  • Pitches should show that you have access to an original story that is of public interest, which you have the capacity to treat with depth and eloquence.
  • We have a bias for pitches with a multimedia component, no matter how little. This could be a plan to produce a video explainer, feature podcast, animated video, or short documentary.
  • Pitches should be submitted alongside a budget that includes projected expenses on lodging, movement, fixer fees, and per diem.
